As the Scouts’ motto says: “Be Prepared!” Putting one’s affairs in order is something many people keep postponing, just like tidying up at home! However, we should all think about putting our affairs in order while we are young and healthy enough to do so in order to protect our loved ones, and in some cases even ourselves, in the event that anything should happen to us. This doesn’t necessarily mean death. It could be serious illness or incapacity to express our wishes.

Through a case study giving practical examples, our seminar will provide a brief overview of three documents that can be put in place to express intentions which we wish to be carried out in the event of something happening to us: Wills (in the event of death), Enduring Powers of Attorney (in the event of inability to manage our own affairs) and Advance Directives (in the event of inability to express our wishes for medical treatment or non-treatment due to serious illness). Once we have made appropriate arrangements, we can live life to the full, carefree in the knowledge that we are prepared for the future. So this so-called “putting one’s house in order” is a positive step, not a negative one. It allows us to relax and enjoy life because we are prepared.
