2021 will be remembered as the year of Mars. Three missions from three different countries have reached the Red Planet to probe different aspects of the Martian environment and pave the way for the first human settlers.
As new images flow from space, netizens are keeping their eyes on their screens, ultimately trying to answer the question of when Terrans will colonise the Red Planet!
Italy has a unique role in this. The fascination with Mars started with the observation of Schiaparelli during the Great Opposition of 1877, when many imagined the planet as riddled with canals (that is artificial channels) and with its own system of oceans and continents, speculations that not even the Mariner program with its flybys was able to smother completely.
But Italian involvement has not ended with Schiaparelli, as many researchers and institutions are still at the forefront, pushing the technology and the scientific research ahead to widen our knowledge about the Red Planet.
We are therefore pleased to present this webinar, where our speakers from the HKU Laboratory for Space Research and the UNIPD-CISAS will lead us toward Mars and beyond!

Denis Bastieri is a professor in General Physics at the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Padua, and is a distinguished professor at the Center for Astrophysics, Guangzhou University. He is also affiliated with the Centre of Studies and Activities for Space CISAS “G. Colombo”, University of Padua; the Laboratory for Space Research, University of Hong Kong and the “Space Philosophy Research Centre”, University of Padua. He is the Special Advisor for International Relations with Guangzhou at the University of Padua. His main interests are in the field of High-Energy and Multi-Messenger Astrophysics, in particular using Low-Power and High-Throughput Computing to deal with Big Data. Denis was awarded "Highly Cited Researcher (world top 1%)" by Clarivate Analytics.

Director of CISAS “G. Colombo” at University of Padua
Stefano Debei directs the Centre of Studies and Activities for Space CISAS “G. Colombo”. Full professor in Mechanical, Thermal and Testing Measurements at the University of Padua, since 1999 he has taught courses in Mechanical, Aerospace and Energy Engineering. He is currently holding courses in Space Measurements and Space Robotics for the Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering. He is also a Technical Manager of SIMBIOS-SYS, an integrated experiment consisting of a high-resolution camera, stereo camera and spectrometer hyperspectral, for the BebiColombo ESA mission. Prof. Debei is the author of more than 300 articles published in international journals and in proceedings of international conferences.

Michalski
Deputy Director of the Laboratory for Space Research at The University of Hong Kong
Joseph Michalski is a geologist and planetary scientist interested in mineral exploration (on any planet) and the relationship between geology, mineralogy and life. His expertise is in clay mineralogy, clay minerals in the solar system, the geology and astrobiology of Mars, and remote sensing and spectroscopy. Using remote sensing and spectroscopy as tools, he explores the geologic history and habitability of Mars and other planetary objects. At the University of Hong Kong, he operates the Planetary Spectroscopy and Mineralogy Laboratory (PSML). Joseph is a CIFAR fellow and a senior editor for Oxford University Press. Awards and Honors: Marie Curie Scholar, United Kingdom Space Agency Aurora Scholar, Bowling Green State University Distinguished Alumni, Arizona State University Graduate Scholar.

Parker
Director of the Laboratory for Space Research at The University of Hong Kong
Quentin Parker currently directs the HKU Laboratory for Space Research and has established a world-leading group in late-stage stellar evolution that includes post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae and massive star ejecta. He joined the Department of Physics at Hong Kong University in March 2014. Prior to that, he was the joint AAO/Macquarie lecturer in Astronomy (2002-2015) and Director of the Research Centre for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics (2010-2014). He also worked at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (1986-1992), Anglo-Australian Observatory (1992-1999) and as a senior research fellow at the Institute for Astronomy in Edinburgh (1999-2002).
